Mystery Miniaturist Identified!

October 9, 2018

We're so excited to have been able to solve the mystery of the prolific mystery of who created a diverse number of miniaturists featured in our upcoming live online auction on Saturday, October 20th.  "IL" is IVAN LAWSON!

Mr. Lawson was featured in the Altamont Enterprise in September 2013 and his miniature cabinet house featured in a miniatures magazine publication.

Mr. Lawson clearly had a great eye for miniatures and had amassed an assortment of delightful treasures which we're excited to offer to the miniatures world in an upcoming auction on Saturday, October 20 at 1PM EST.

The pieces are finely crafted using hardwoods and other authentic materials including a 1/12 scale breakfront containing  "lead-like glass" doors, a carved pediment and decorative crown moldings.

There were also surprise discoveries like this miniature cabinet house (dollhouse) believed to be inspired by a full size counterpart on view in the Van Cortlandt House Museum in the Bronx, New York, reported to be the oldest cabinet house in the United States.

This miniatures collection offers a wide range of styles using various materials and shows a breadth and depth of skill and technique not often found in a single artist's portfolio.  Ivan Lawson created  a variety of pieces from a colonial hutch cabinet to a traditional Duncan Phyfe breakfront to upholstered furniture.

While many leading miniatures experts we have consulted with have been unable to identify this mark, it was the original collector's grandaughter who saved the day to help solve the mystery!

To see more of this collection and the entire auction catalogue (over 130 lots!) head to the D. Thomas Miniatures auction and register for the event scheduled for Saturday, October 20 at 1pm EST.

Looking forward to an awesome auction!
