About The Founder/Miniaturist
If you've spent even a few minutes talking with me, you'll quickly discover one thing: I have been unapologetically passionate about miniatures for as long as I can remember.
My fascination began as a child watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. I was captivated by that tiny castle, the treehouse, the trolly and the miniature world (Neighborhood of Make Believe) that appeared throughout the show. At just eight years old, I asked my father, a cabinet maker by trade, to build me a dollhouse. That wasn't exactly what a young boy growing up in Brooklyn in the 1970s was expected to ask for.
Thankfully, my parents encouraged curiosity instead of conformity. My father built that dollhouse for me, by firm request by my mother, and it became the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of craftsmanship, creativity, and the extraordinary artistry found in fine art dollhouse miniatures.
That early lesson shaped more than a hobby. It taught me to follow my passions without hesitation. After earning my degree in Communications from Emerson College in Boston, I built a successful career with Revlon, Inc., one of the world's leading consumer products companies. While I enjoyed that chapter of my career, miniatures never stopped calling me.
Eventually, I founded D. Thomas Fine Miniatures, where I combined my marketing background, love of storytelling, and passion for artisan miniatures into a business dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing exceptional miniature collections. What began as a retail gallery in the picturesque village of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, in the historic Hudson Valley, has evolved into one of the country's leading online destinations for buying and selling fine dollhouse miniatures through professionally curated estate sales and online auctions.
Today, I work primarily with collectors and families who are downsizing, settling estates, or looking for a trusted expert to help sell their miniature collections. I understand that these collections often represent decades of passion, friendships, travel, and artistic discovery. My role is not simply to sell them—it's to honor the stories behind them while finding the right new homes for each piece.
Whether I'm handling a museum-quality artisan miniature or a cherished family collection, I approach every project with the same care, integrity, and respect. I often say: "There is a seduction in scale that ignites wonder. Miniatures capture the imagination and invite us to dream, discover, and explore. Sharing that sense of wonder with others has become one of the greatest joys of my life."
Education has always been just as important to me as buying and selling. I regularly present my History of Miniatures lecture to libraries, museums, clubs, and organizations throughout the United States, both in person and virtually. I also host Meet the Miniaturist, a podcast interview series on YouTube featuring some of the world's most accomplished miniature artists, where collectors can hear directly from the artisans shaping today's miniature world.
In 2020, I appeared as a contestant on HGTV's The Biggest Little Christmas Showdown, a tournament-style miniature building competition hosted by James Monroe Iglehart, alongside judges Genevieve Gorder, Dave Asling, and the inimitable June Clinkscales. The experience introduced millions of viewers to the artistry and creativity behind miniature making.
For several years, I have also curated the annual holiday miniature exhibition inside Nybelwyck Hall, the magnificent dollhouse permanently displayed at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York.
Beyond my business, I remain deeply committed to the miniature community. I am a former Trustee and active member of the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (IGMA), supporting the preservation and advancement of artisan miniature craftsmanship.
Outside the world of miniatures, I volunteer as a mentor, Wish Grantor, and member of the Mission Delivery Committee with the Make-A-Wish Foundation Hudson Valley.
