Tom and Lois Sawtell spent their retirement years sharing an interest in history and a passion for miniatures. They married, purchased an historic home built in the 1800s and raised a family in the ideally New England community of Guilford, Connecticut. There they built and collected miniatures which now seek new happy homes at my next estate auction which starts on Sunday, September 18 at 7pm ET and will end on Sunday, September 25 at approximately 7pm ET* on my eBay site here.

ree

The Sawtell's were so involved in the miniatures world and crafting and collecting that they built an extension to their home with acted as their shared studio workspace and filled it with specialty tools, materials and supplies for making miniatures.

The pair spent time taking expert level classes at the famed Guild School in Castine, Maine and at the annual Guild Study Program in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and other locations along the East Coast. Some classes they took together and some separately but always with one thing in mind:learning how to make awesome miniatures...and succeeding!

ree

The Sawtell's paid very careful attention to the history behind the pieces that they crafted, taking copious notes on their background and stories. They were maticulous in their attention to detail when putting these pieces together in the classes they took with IGMA instructors. ABOVE: Corner Cupboard and Ladder Back Chair crafted by the Sawtell's in a class taught by IGMA Fellow Mark Murphy. William Clinger Chair (middle photo).

ree

They were quite social and had an extension network of friends they took class with and learned from.

I was thrilled to host the National Museum of Toys & Miniatures in Kansas City, Missouri in a special Meet the Miniaturist livestream on Sunday, September 11, 2022. You can watch the replay here.

ree

Attendees were treated to a virtual tour of the museum which houses the largest collection of fine scale miniatures on display in the world including the William Martin Breakfast Room designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and crafted in 1/12 scale miniature by IGMA Fellows Allison and Steve Jedd (1999).

ree

We were met by the curatorial team including Amy McKune, Curator of Collections and Dr. Madeline Rislow, Sr. Manager of Learning & Engagement who took attendees on a virtual tour of the museum. They shared the incredible work by Johannes Landmann, who made the mermaid harpsichord with hand-painted lid (2004) and the carved Jardinaire by Linda LaRoche (1998).

ree

The pair also shared a closeup view of some of the tiny treasures on display at the museum as well as their insights on the miniatures including the Architect's Classroom by William R. Robertson (1998).

ree

A very special thank you to the curatorial team and the Rebekah Boyer, Sr. Manager of Development for this extra special little treat. For more information about this awesome museum head to the Email info@toyandminiaturemuseum.org.

I'm excited to announce my summer auction of vintage 1970s miniatures from the estate of a collector from Connecticut. The sale is filled with a number of pieces created during the beginning of the "golden era" of dollhouse miniature collecting and includes several IGMA Artisans and Fellows including Betty Valentine (F), George Hoffman (F) and Roger Gutheil (F), (furniture), Deborah McKnight, Carolyn Nygren Curren (CNC Miniatures) and Jean Tag (Pottery), Jane Bermier and Jane Conneen (Readable Books) as well as Sylvia Roundtree, Virginia Merrill, Mary Grady O'Brien.

ree

There are a number of lesser-known, but still highly talented artists represented in this sale as well including Robert L. Carlisle (furniture), Langdon, Milton Bond (painting), Warren Dick, Walter Stout (furniture) and John R (indecipherable signature). Additionally, there are pieces by Ed Norton, founding member of NAME and work by Roger Gutheil for Chestnut Hill, makers of fine furniture started in the late 1940's.

ree

Reverse glass framed painting featuring a primitive colonial American scene by artisan Milton Bond (1977) pictured below.

ree

This sale is filled with a number of pieces from the "transitional" period of miniature making; a time before miniatures became more refined, created with the adult collector in mind, including pieces by The Arnells and Mell Prescott and more mass manufactured makers like Strombecker, Dolphin Originals, Chestnut Hill along with several unknown artists or pieces with indecipherable signatures. Upholstered sofa is shown below with decorative piping with hardwood sculpted legs and made by Mell Prescott. Ms. Prescott has an award named after her, give each year by NAME, the National Association of Miniatures Enthusiasts for excellence in miniature making.

I had a great chat with Troy Bettridge recently from the popular Instagram account TulsaTinyStuff on a special Meet the Miniaturist broadcast. Troy shared his terrific collection of vintage miniatures and his extensive knowledge of tiny treasures from the 1940s through the 1960s. Miniatures made during this period helped with the transition to the modern miniatures movement defined by more refined and realistic work which appealed to a growing adult audience at the time. His expertise really helped to add insights on the types of miniatures featured in my upcoming sale

ree

Here are some additional miniature treasures featured in this sale:

ree

Hardwood William & Mary Table with Hand turned legs by Warren Dick.

ree

Pottery by IGMA Fellow Deborah McKnight!

ree

Readable books (some with color illustrations!) by IGMA Fellow Jane Bernier.

ree

Mid century modern style upholstered chair with wood legs by unknown (unsigned) artisan.

ree

5 drawer dresser made of hardwoods by Srombecker.

ree

See you all at the sale!
