This is a collection that celebrates imagination, craftsmanship, and the joyful spirit that made Karen's work so beloved by collectors around the world. Whether you're already a devoted Markland collector or discovering her work for the very first time, I hope this collection introduces you to one of the miniature world's truly unforgettable artists.
A Bit of Her Bio...
Karen Louise Markland (1942–2017) was born in Akron, Ohio, earned a degree in art from the University of Colorado, and eventually settled in Texas, where she built a remarkable career creating artisan dollhouse miniatures. She became an IGMA Fellow—the highest professional recognition awarded by the International Guild of Miniature Artisans and spent more than three decades exhibiting and selling her work at miniature shows across the country. Her painted furniture and whimsical accessories became instantly recognizable and highly sought after by collectors. Although we lost Karen in 2017, her artwork continues to bring smiles to collectors everywhere. Because no new pieces will ever be created, each surviving work has become a lasting reminder of her remarkable imagination and artistic legacy.
More Than Miniatures
One of the things I admire most about Karen's work is that it doesn't simply decorate a dollhouse. It tells stories. Every piece feels as though it belongs in a tiny world where rabbits host tea parties, mice gather for celebrations, Noah prepares for the flood, and every season arrives with warmth, humor, and charm. Her unique style which is instantly recognizable, bridges folk art, illustration, and dollhouse miniatures in a way very few artists have ever accomplished. Everything she created was individually hand painted, giving every piece its own personality. No two collections ever feel exactly alike.
Why This Collection Is So Special
Over the years I've handled many important miniature estates. This collection stands out.
Not simply because of its size—but because of its incredible depth and amazing condition. these pieces come from a West Coast collector looking to downsize after. years of careful curation and aquisition of Karen's pieces.
Most collectors know Karen Markland for her charming seasonal decorations and whimsical accessories. This collection certainly includes those. But it also contains many pieces that I've rarely, if ever, encountered together in one place. Among the highlights are beautifully hand-painted furniture pieces including a substantial double-door armoire, a charming painted bench, distinctive cabinetry with doors that open, and other larger furnishings in 1:12 scale that enthusiasts seldom have the opportunity to bring into their collections.There is even an incredibly charming miniature dollhouse created in Karen's unmistakable whimsical style and a delightful surprise that demonstrates just how broad her creativity truly was.
Noah's Ark and Other Collector Favorites
Perhaps no subject is more closely associated with Karen Markland than her celebrated Noah's Ark creations. Collectors have treasured these imaginative scenes for years, and I'm excited that this estate includes several different Noah's Ark groupings featuring the delightful animals and whimsical storytelling that helped make these pieces so famous.
Beyond Noah's Ark, the collection spans nearly every theme that collectors associate with Karen's work: colorful Springtime easter and gentle rabbit and playful mice pieces, Halloween and autumn time miniature, traditional Christmas and Victorian Christmas, whimsical signage and plaques, framed artwork, shelf sitters and more!
