Meet the Miniaturist: Greg Britton

Meet the Miniaturist Greg Britton from @empireminis on Instagram! Greg is a lifelong history buff and loves collecting 19th-century furniture. He has a background in cabinet making and is currently restoring his (full size!) home which turned into a passion for making miniature houses, roomboxes and scale furniture. Greg draws from inspiration found in the region where he lives in Nova Scotia, Canada.

the Blue

In this episode we hear all about Greg's interest in period furniture, historical architecture and woodworking which inspired his work creating two extraordinary scratch-built dollhouses and multiple scale furniture pieces. His miniature wood flooring is amazing and we are treated to several insider tips and tricks to making floors really stand out in a dollhouse.

Greg Britton transitioned from full-scale woodworking to creating intricate miniatures after discovering thorn rooms online. With a background in cabinet making and a lifelong interest in antiques, Greg has dedicated himself to crafting detailed miniature rooms and furniture that reflect historical authenticity. His designs, including the architectural styles of the Blue House and The Farmhouse, showcase the craftsmanship and precision required to bring these works to life.

The Process Behind the Art

One of the most fascinating aspects of our conversation was hearing Greg talk about his creative process. From researching historical references to choosing the right materials, every step is meticulously planned to ensure authenticity. Greg shared how his surroundings in Eastern Canada inspire his miniatures, reflecting the European craftsmanship settlers brought to the new world.

Greg's ability to adapt full-size woodworking skills to miniatures highlights the precision and innovation required in this art form. Greg also shared his unique techniques for achieving realistic flooring, utilizing old-growth woods and creative finishing methods to add depth and character to his pieces.

Challenges and Innovations in Miniature Making

Greg discussed the challenges of transitioning from large-scale woodworking to the precision required for miniatures. He also delved into the unique approaches needed for miniature joinery, where even slight discrepancies can impact the final piece. Another fascinating topic was his use of innovative lighting techniques that enhance the ambiance without compromising design.

For collectors and enthusiasts, Greg’s insights provide a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every piece. Whether you’re drawn to period-specific rooms, architectural miniatures, or lifelike furnishings, understanding the work behind these creations makes them all the more special.

A BIG thank you to Greg for sharing his work, his talents and his knowledge with us and we look forward to seeing more from this maker in the future. Be sure to listen to the full episode featuring Greg Britton, and stay tuned for more conversations with the world’s leading and up and coming miniature artists and collectors.
